Water Leakage in Mumbai Costal Road, Eknath Shinde inspected the Coastal Road

On one hand, inaugration of Phase 2 of Mumbai Coastal Road was announced, while on the other hand, after complaints of water leakage in Phase 1, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and many high officials arrived to inspect the Coastal Road, " "There is no threat to the original structure. It will be filled using specific technology...." Marked CM. 

Several Complaints of Water Leakage in Mumbai Costal Road 

Several complaints of water leakage was filed within 2 months of the inauguration of India's first undersea tunnel — Multi-crore Mumbai Coastal Road project, whose 1st phase was inaugurated on 11 March by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis. Along with this, the inauguration of 2nd Phase was also announced. The CM marked, 

“I immediately called the commissioner. There is leakage at two-three places,” 


Now the question arises whether the intelligence of the engineers failed? Does this leakage indicate lack of quality in the multi-crore MCPR? Or just something else?

CM Eknath Shinde arrived for inspection

On Sunday, a huge amount of water leakage was observed in the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Undersea Tunnel. As soon as the news of the leakage was received, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde personally went to inspect the leakage on Mumbai Coastal Road. 

Along with Many High Officials 

Along with Eknath Shinde, many High Officials, Contractor and engineers involved in the construction of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project were also present during the inspection of the project. The Officials said, 

"We are yet to check as traffic is on till 11 pm. We will be doing some grouting to arrest the leak,"

Exact Location of Leakage in MCPR 

According to News18's report, the water seeping on the road started in large quantities when leakage started occurring 100 metres away on the road leading towards Marine Drive.

Statement of Eknath Shinde on this Matter 

"There is leakage at two-three places,”

CM Eknath Shinde talked about a permanent solution to this issue without troubling Mumbaikars, "There is no threat to the original structure. It will be filled using specific technology, and we will find a permanent solution. Passengers will not face any problems. 

He also claimed that there was no leakage even in the rainy season, "There will be no water here during the rainy season,” 

Suggestion of Polymer Grounding on Joints 

"There were leakages in two to three expansion joints of the coastal road, and they will be plugged using polymer grouting. I have suggested polymer grouting on all 25 joints on each side of the tunnel to avoid water seepage even during the monsoon," the Chief Minister mentioned While speaking to the Reporters. 

Announcement of 2nd Phase, which  Connects Worli to Kandivali 

Addition to this, made announcement of inaugration of 2nd phase, which Connects Worli to kandivali, "The second phase of the coastal road from Marine Drive to Worli will be thrown open to traffic by June 10,"

How can the opposition remain silent when news of the leakage of the multi-Million dollar project Mumbai Coastal Road Project comes into the "spotlight" ? 

On this, Cabinet Minister Aditya Thackeray and Shiv Sena UBT Leader Aditya Thackeray criticized the Shinde Government and BMC on his microblogging website on X said, "

“The Mumbai Coastal Road would have been fully completed and opened to citizens by December 2023 had the MVA been in government. However, after the corrupt regime toppled our regime, they slowed down the work and worked on cost escalation."

Prominent Writer Amitav Ghosh also expressed his displeasure over this and called it "Completely Predictable", on Platform X (Formerly known as Twitter), "Mumbai’s coastal highway is a disaster in the making. But some construction companies made a lot of money so how does it matter?"
