Mislabeling and Misleading is detected in 70% of the Best 36 Protein Powders in India. Study Revealed that, "most Indian-made herbal protein-based supplements are poor quality...."

The Liver Doc, which is an independent research organization, conducted a research study on "Protein Supplements sold in India" a year ago. At that time the study was not given so much priority, But today When Kunal Bahl, the founder of Snapdeal as well asa an investor tweeted to be careful on protein supplements, now this research has come into the spotlight.

Currently, a fresh and trending example of this is Patanjali Company Limited which is facing the Supreme Court's reprimand in the matter of Misleading and Mislabelling in Advertisements and Packaging of Products.

Kunal Bahl, "Be Careful" 


Kunal Bahl tweeted that he was recommended to take Protein supplements a few years ago, but within 6-8 weeks of consuming Protein supplements, his health became critical. And Along with this tweeted he also mentioned the official Research study of The Liver Doc's research.

Kunal Bahl Tweeted, "A few years ago I was recommended to take protein supplements & I tried out a very well known domestic brand assuming it would be safe. Within 6-8 weeks it created serious health issues for me. Thankfully the health condition reversed once I stopped.

The Research Study Revealed 


The study revealed — “most Indian-made herbal protein-based supplements are poor quality and contain liver toxic botanicals”.

In the research, a sample of 36 most popular Protein Supplements of India was taken, in which it was found that among the 36 top brand Protein Supplements, 70% of the supplements have wrong advertising or mislabeling was also seen very much.

Research study found that 9 out of 36 protein supplements have less than 40% protein, or the rest have more than 60% protein. But the thing is that in the advertisements a power protein supplement named B-protein they contain 40% protein, but in reality only 10% protein was detected.

The Study Claim that, "Big muscles Protein Whey, with an advertised 76.5%, but detected a protein of 26.1%; Big Muscles Vegan Protein, with an advertised 81.3% and detected 19.4% protein. Overall, the best product with very high pure-whey-based protein.."

The list of names of the products used as samples in liver docs research and the names of their manufacturers.



Philips found in the study and said, "In this figure, we have shown how severe the mislabeling on the protein products is, with respect to protein content advertised on the bottle/package vs what is actually discovered on analysis. The gradient shows least to worst protein percent mislabelin

Fungal Toxin and Pesticides detected 


In the Research study, Fungal toxins and pesticides are also found in some of the 36 samples. A harmful Chemical named "Aflatoxin" is found which have negative impact on food and also decrease growth of a minors.
Along with this, this chemical can also give rise to diseases like liver suppression and liver cancer. Aflatoxin was found in 5 out of 36 power protein supplements, including Ultra soya protein, Whey Isolate, B protein, Protein powder, Nutrilite plant Protein.

 



The Research study on Pesticides stated that, "Concerning pesticide detection, three out of 36 samples were contaminated by a trace amount of pesticide. Vegan Protein by Big Muscles contained Fenobucarb at 0.061 mg/kg; Protein & Herbs by Oziva contained Azoxystrobin at 0.033 mg/kg AND Dimethomorph at 0.013 mg/kg & Weight Plus Protein by Dr. Vaidya’s contained Thiamethoxam at 0.017 mg/kg. Only among protein brands that were purely plant/vegan was pesticide residue identified, & none were noted in pure whey or blended whey products."
