Be alert ! India is now the "Cancer Capital of the World" report by the Apollo Hospital gave this alarming title regarding health of Indians 


On 7th April Sunday, International Health Day, the 4th edition of Apollo Hospital's "Health of Nation Report" came out in which the alarming report of deadly disease like Cancer among the young people in India make Headlines in the world.

The worrying figures of the latest health report by Apollo, will tell you how the rapidly increasing cancer and NCDs among young people in India is costing trillions of rupees to India's economy.

Revealing Shocking Data 


Research has revealed that 1 in 3 people in India has pre-diabetes, 2 in 3 has pre-hypertension and 1person in 10 is experiencing a fatal disease like depression.

Apart from this, a lot of emphasis has been given in the reports on NCDs inculding diseases like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health disease, hypertension etc. It was revealed in the report that total out of 63% people in India died due to NCDs Non Communicable Disease. Due to the increasing incidence of cancer among young Indians, India has been declared Cancer Capital of the World". 

Low Screening Rate than Recommend 

In India, women usually get —  Breast, Cervix and Ovary cancer, and men usually get — Lung, Mouth and Prostate cancer. But the thing to keep in mind is that, despite having so many cancer cases, the cancer screening rate in India is very low compared to other countries.

Alarming Data for Youth 

India's youth are also facing such a devastating disease, depression. It has been said in the reports that 1 in 10 people in India are suffering from depression - including 1 in 5 youth in the age group of 18-25 experiencing depression. 80% of the people experiencing depression are between 18-30 or senior citizens of age above 65.

Major Causes of Cancer 


One of the main causes of cancer is obesity more than recommended. In India, the incidence of obesity increased from 9% in 2016 to 20% in 2023. Apollo research revealed that 90% women and 80% men have higher Hip to Waist ratio than recommend.

More Major reasons of Cancer can be not doing physical exercise, not  having proper meal, work while sitting and Improper Lifestyle. Further, there may be some reasons which are not within our reach which are genetics, environmental exposure and many more.

Revealing Alarming Data 

Research study revealed that 63% of deaths in India are because to NCDs and due to this it is estimated that by 2030, India's economy will suffer a loss of $3.55 trillion.

In India, 1.39 million cancer cases were reported in 2020 and this figure is likely to increase rapidly in 5 years — may hit 1.57 million by 2025.

Data of Other Countries and India 

The mean age of getting Breast Cancer in US and Europe is 63 and in India this age is 52. The average age of getting Lung Cancer in Western Countries is 70 and in India it is 59. Beast Cancer Screening rate in United States, UK and China is 82, 70 and 23 respectively, in India the rate is 1.9 Cervical Cancer Screening Rate in UK and China is 70 and 43 respectively, which is 0.9 in India.

Chief Executive Said that....

President and Chief Executive Officer of Apollo Hospital, Madhu Sashidhar, said that, " What is striking in our database is the median age at which people are diagnosed with cancer; cancer affects a much younger population. It is 52 years for breast cancer, 54 years for cervical cancer and 59 years for lung cancer,”.
