Jammu Kashmir National Highway Update
On the morning of Thursday 1 January, the approximately 270 km long Jammu Kashmir National Highway was closed.Due to which about 400 vehicles remained stranded on the road.
National Highway 44, is the only highway of Jammu and Kashmir which connects Jammu to other states and cities of the country. The highway had to be closed due to landslide in Kishtwar Pathri near Sherbibi.
"Vehicular movement on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway resumed early on February 3 after remaining suspended for two days following multiple landslides triggered by heavy rains and snowfall,” the officials said.
"After hectic efforts, the road clearance agencies concerned cleared the debris and allowed stranded vehicles to move towards their respective destinations late Friday afternoon, paving the resumption of normal traffic from both sides this morning,” the officials said.
"Middle and higher reaches of the north, north-western and central parts (of Kashmir) may receive 7-10 inches of snow, lower reaches and plains may receive 3-6 inches, while plains of central Kashmir may receive rain with 1-2 inches of snow,” the spokesperson said.
"Middle and higher reaches of south Kashmir may receive 12-15 inches of snow, while lower reaches and plains may receive 6-9 inches. Plains of Jammu division may receive light to moderate rain with thunder/lightning,” the spokesperson said.
Due to the closure of Jammu Kashmir National Highway, things like food and drink were affected. Import of food, medicine and everyday items, mutton, grains and much more stopped.
Due to snowfall, roads became slippery in Ramban and Banihal due to which Road Department officials instructed people to drive with caution.
